There have been just a couple of women in my life who have left their indelible and profound mark on me. Many people have asked me what my generation needs from women today. Women of today are incredibly unique with vastly diverse thoughts, desires and opinions. I cant speak to all of my generations needs. But I can tell you about mine!
1. Listen To Me
Just sit there and allow me to talk. No anecdotes or profound answers are necessary. I dont want answers. I just want you to be okay with my questions.
2. Last With Me
I long for someone to be there in those hours that I am afraid to call anyone else. Be available to me through the long haul. Show me that you will not abandon me like so many have. Model a friend that does not desert or run away when things get hard. And as the years pass, show me that not only are you someone I can look up to and follow, but you are also one that I can walk beside.
3. Love on me
Show me a love that keeps on loving even when I make mistakes or embarrass you. Show me that you can dream for me when I have no belief in my own capability. Show me that you believe in me when the world is telling me that I have failed. Be someone I can respect and look up to and give me tangible evidence of unconditional love.
4. Learn from me
Sit with me and learn from my life lessons. Hear what I have to say before you tell me all the things that you know. It is refreshing to encounter a woman that is humble enough to push her years of experience and knowledge aside in order to hear mine. The funny thing is that once I see that you desire to value my thoughts, I have an increasing curiosity in yours.
5. Live with me
I have been given one short lifetime. I long to live my life as abundantly and fully in my allotted years as possible. But I dont want to do it alone! I want you to show me your faith lived out. Id rather see a sermon than hear one any day. Id rather that you walk with me and watch you point the way. I want to see that you can live a radical faith that does the extreme and irrational at times. I want to see who you are when no one else is looking.
6. Laugh with me.
Show me that Christianity is not boring but that it is risky and adventurous at times. I want to have fun and enjoy what I am doing wherever and whatever that may be. Show me that zeal, passion and inspiration are not circumstantial but a state of being. Laugh with me and possess a happiness that flows over and splashes those around you!
There are many people who have tried to express love to those they care about. However, you can probably think of one or two people who have made such an impact on your life that you think of them daily. Those are the people who model Christ and inspire us to live abundantly. They are always before us and their lives echo one request.... Pass it on to someone else!. Listen to me, last with me, love on me, learn from me, live with me, and laugh with me. Express your care and concern for me in these ways and I will know that you have loved. They are truths that Jesus Himself practiced with his disciples and they are still essential today. It seems obvious to most, and yet few take time to specifically ponder how they love others ...even fewer attempt to live it out!
